Orphan

Dir. László Nemes

1957. In Budapest, after the uprising against the Communist regime, Andor idolizes his missing father, a soldier against the Nazis who vanished into the camps. His life is changed, however, with the arrival of Berend, an angry, violent man who seems to have a connection to Andor’s mother, Klára. Is the high-strung Berend actually Andor’s father, or someone else who has emerged from their turbulent past?
From Oscar-winning director László Nemes (Son of Saul, 88th Academy Award for Best International Feature Film) Orphan is a film of a family perched atop the ruins of Hungary’s turbulent history, falling from one oppressive regime and into another. Shot in 35mm, this is a stunning film which will haunt viewers for days.
